How can I get a high protein diet if I go to school?
October 11th, 2007 | by Jared |Zach asked:
I want to gain muscle and lose fat, but lately I have been dieting and working out after school everyday but I cannot seem to be getting that much stronger let alone see difference in muscle mass. I was doing it for about 2 months but I havent seen any improvments, sure I lost weight but I can’t see to get the muscle. I think its because I’m not getting that much protein in my diet a day but its hard with school, the food there does more harm than good, and its a small school so we don’t have the salad bars and buffets and all that, we get food the cook orders from food of america and we get one main course and usually dessert fruit and milk. It tastes like ******* but its the only thing I have. Bringing a lunch would be hard as well as I don’t have many high protein foods at my house. So can somebody please help with this dilemma?

packing your lunch or at least bringing a protein drink is the only solution. ask your mom (or whoever grocery shops) to buy more high protein foods for you to take. make your own list. a peanut butter sandwich has protein in it and would be easy to get.

Well your not going to find protein laying around, you HAVE to buy it and BRING it, no other choice that I see of. My son trains and brings his lunch everyday, I am sure if you explain your needs to your parents they would be open to it and help, if not do some odd jobs and buy your own food, sounds harsh but you have to sacrifice for what you want.

First of all its a misconception you need mass amounts of protein to gain muscle, you gain muscle by doing resistance training and eating enough protein. Most people do not need more then 100 grams a day.any more then that will put your kidney’s into exhaustion and possibly make you ill.You can get protein through protein drinks, bars, nuts, seeds, cheese,or carrying a can of tuna,a chicken ****** etc.You also need to make sure you balance it with plenty of veggies and fruit and always lots and lots of water.

Buy protein bars and eat them at luch with some milk and an apple or some baby carrots. The look like granola bars so it’s not a big deal. We like Kraft’s South Beach Diet meal replacement bars, 19 grams of protein - that’s a ton! they also make snack bars with like 10 grams of protein, but go for higher protein when you can. You can get them at the grocery store. Go look at the diet foods, Slimfast and all that stuff is where they keep protein bars. Other good ones are Hooah bars, Clif, and EAS nutrition. Good luck!

the diet IS the dilemma
Saw a video tape from Covert Bailey. He has a PhD from MIT in body biomechanics. He shreds the high protein diet - and explains that when you go off the diet - you will gain your weight right back.
best to have a balanced diet (and really - all that protein really makes your kidneys work harder) and balance a cardio workout with strength training - alternating days - each week
best of luck!

As you are losing fat, you may be gaining muscle but just unable to see it yet. The key to building muscle is to challenge your body- by lifting weight you aren’t used to. If you go to the gym and lift something you can breeze through, but maybe have a little bit of trouble on your last set, then you are definitely lifting nowhere near enough.
As for the food, try to have several small meals throughout the day instead of 3 big ones. Have a healthy breakfast, a small healthy snack before and after lunch, a nice lunch (skip the dessert), dinner, then a snack after dinner. The ‘meals’ are smaller than your typical meals, but your snacks should be a protein bar with a piece of fruit or something like that, which could be eaten in between classes or something.
